Sixth Grade Seminar

Welcome to Math Seminar

CHAPTER 1 REVIEW GAME

What is Math Seminar?

Math Seminar is a class that will help remediate your skill deficiencies using the web-based ALEKS program.  It is not math study hall!

What is ALEKS?

Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces (ALEKS) is a web-based, artificially intelligent assessment and learning system. ALEKS uses adaptive questioning to quickly and accurately determine exactly what a student knows and doesn't know in a course. ALEKS then instructs the student on the topics he or she is most ready to learn. As a student works through a course, ALEKS periodically reassesses the student to ensure that topics learned are also retained. ALEKS courses are very complete in their topic coverage and ALEKS avoids multiple-choice questions. A student who shows a high level of mastery of an ALEKS course will be successful in the actual course he or she is taking.

Do I earn a grade?

Yes, you will earn a grade on the work you do.  Unlike a traditional math class, in Math Seminar students are graded on their growth and hard work.  The ALEKS program tailors the program to each individual student.  It is then that student’s responsibility to work through the program at a steady rate of progress.  The topics covered in the ALEKS program may or may not coincide with the daily curriculum taught in your student’s math class, therefore, you may see a variance in grades between math class and math seminar.

Students are reminded that they MUST SHOW ALL WORK AT ALL TIMES!!!

Grades will be calculated with the following criteria:

30% Time

Students should complete 25 min/day on ALEKS.

50% Topics

Students should be able to complete 2.5 topics per day

20%  Knowledge Check

The score for this section will come from the percent correct on the Knowledge Check.

There will be no formal homework associated with Math Seminar
